Pet Portraiture is just as much an emotional skill as it is a technical skill
Having portraits of our pets captures their unique personalities and immortalizes our cherished memories together. They bring warmth to our homes, gifting daily reminders of their love and companionship. Each picture tells a story, celebrating the joy they bring into our lives and preserving their spirit forever. Pet photography is unique. It involves understanding animal behavior, creating a comfortable environment, often using natural light to highlight their features, and requires a degree of patience. Lastly the photographer needs to not just have real empathy for the love you have for your pet, but truly love pets themselves.
1. DISCUSS YOUR VISION
We will have a pre-session consultation. This is your chance to discuss your vision. Consider the following:
Style: Do you prefer candid, natural shots or more posed portraits?
Location: Do you want to shoot indoors at home, in a park, or at a favorite pet-friendly location?
Outfits: Will your pet wear accessories or outfits? Some pets love dressing up, while others prefer to keep it simple.
2. PREPARE FOR THE SESSION
Preparation is key to a successful photography session. Here are some tips:
Health Check: Ensure your pet is healthy and comfortable. If they’re nervous or unwell, it might be better to reschedule.
Training: If your pet has basic commands (sit, stay), practice these before the session to make things smoother.
Grooming: Consider a trip to the groomer beforehand for a fresh look. A well-groomed pet will shine in photos!
Pick a time and season best suited for your breed. This is so important for Brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs and Bulldogs. The summer heat can actually be very dangerous for them to be exposed to for long periods of time.
3. THE DAY OF THE SHOOT
On the day of the session, make sure to bring everything your pet might need:
Familiar Items: Bring their favorite toys or blankets to help them feel at ease.
Treats: A few treats can work wonders for keeping their attention and encouraging good behavior.
Water and Bowls: Keep your pet hydrated, especially if the session is outdoors.
SETTING THE MOOD
Pets love new environments, specially those with a keen sense of smell. Arrive at the location a bit early to allow your pet to acclimate. Give them time to explore their surroundings and sniff around, which can help them feel more comfortable and relaxed.
5. DURING THE SESSION
Expect a mix of fun and chaos! Pets can be unpredictable, which is part of their charm. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Patience is Key: I will likely take a variety of shots, some posed and others candid. Be patient as your pet gets used to myself and the camera. This is where an experienced pet photographer who is familiar animal behavior is key. Unless your pet is highly trained the photographer needs time to observe your pet.
Playfulness: Let your pet be themselves. Some of the best photos come from spontaneous moments, so don’t hesitate to let them play and explore.
Guidance: I will guide you and your pet through poses or setups. Trust their expertise to capture the best angles and lighting.
6. POST-SESSION FOLLOW-UP
After the shoot please allow up to 1 to 2 weeks for final images.
REVIEW AND SELECTION
When the photos are ready, you’ll have the opportunity to select the images you enjoy best. Depending on the package you chose you will then receive high resolution files and prints.
Once you have your photos, enjoy showcasing them! You can create a gallery wall, share them on social media, or even use them for holiday cards. Your pet’s personality and charm will shine through in every shot, serving as a beautiful reminder of your bond.
CONCLUSION
Booking a photography session for your pet is an exciting adventure that can yield wonderful results. By preparing in advance and selecting the right photographer, you can create lasting memories of your beloved companion.
